The Hallowden King

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)
A relic of a shattered and forbidden planetoid, the derelict Crypt of Crethicay drifts through the emptiness of silent space, an ominous shadow lurking just beyond sight.

Yet under its surface the Hallowden King reigns supreme. Summoning nefarious beasts from the haunted Circle of Chaos, the Hallowden King prepares his growing legions for their attack on the world of the living.

A formerly suppressed part of his mind now energized, Halkenn experiences a vision of a horrifying alternate future, where the Hallowden King has laid waste to the many cities of Glyos.

Springing quickly into action with his Hub Drone, Quinmorr, Halkenn uses his psychic force to locate the Crypts of Crethicay, intent on eliminating the twisted machinations of the Hallowden King before they can become a reality.

Model Aircraft Scales For Wargaming

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

From left to right - Scotia-Grendel, Warlord Games, Revell, Airfix.

Warlord Games introduction of their innovative Blood Red Sky has kickstarted WWII fighter games; a genre that has been in the doldrums for some years.

However, aeroplane miniatures are based on traditional model scales rather than wargame miniature sizes so I have pulled some planes out of my collection to demonstrate what's available. These are all ME bf 109 models.

1/72
The most popular aircraft scale with a vast selection of aircraft on offer. There is ferocious competition between manufacturers keeping prices down. You can expect to pay about £7.50 per fighter.
Pros: Large, detailed, look great, good value, many prepainted.
Antis: Large, take up space, expensive per model.
Equivalent: Usually reckoned to be 20mm to 25mm wargame scale, but they take up much the same table space as a 28mm vehicle model - planes are big.

1/144
This scale has languished in recent years but it has taken an upswing in recent years as Far Eastern manufacturers and diecast model makers have adopted the scale. You can expect to pay about £5 per fighter.
Pros: Large enough for reasonable detail, small enough to have a small footfall on the table, many prepainted, good value.
Antis: Restricted range in west, expensive per model.
Equivalent: Usually reckoned to be 8-10 mm but they take up as much room as a 15mm vehicle model.

1/200
This was the scale chosen by Wings of War/Glory and has been adopted by Warlord Games. Very few other models available. Expect to pay about £15 for a prepainted WoG model or £20 per six planes unpainted from Warlord Games
Pros: As 1/144 but prepainted are expensive, unpainted good value.
Antis: Very restricted choice of manufacturers and models.
Equivalent: Similar to 1/144

1/300
These are the classic metal wargame models. Expect to pay about £1.50 per plane.
Pros: Small so don't take up much room, cheap to buy, metal so tough.
Antis:Limited range of planes and manufacturers, small so undetailed, metal so heavy.
Equivalent: 6mm

Other scales

1/48: Are you mad? The classic model makers scale. These are big so good for play across a tennis court floor for demo games. Great range, all levels of detail and price.

1/100: The classic 15mm, these are rather rare.

1/285: Can be used more or less interchangeably with 1:300.

Review: 40186 Year of the Pig

The Chinese new year commences on February 5th and this year LEGO has released an unprecedented number of sets in celebration, some of which will only be sold in the region.

One that will soon be readily available to everyone is 40186 Year of the Pig, the fifth in a series of similar sets that depict the appropriate animal for the year. From 28th January it will be the gift with purchase at shop.LEGO.com. Before I knew about that I ordered a couple on Bricklink from a seller in Malaysia, so I can now bring you this review ahead of the promotion.

It comes in a flip-top box which can be opened without destroying it. I would post a picture but unfortunately it was badly damaged in transit :(

The money packet inside is an important aspect of the set and should be filled with cash before gifting it to someone. Chinese money packets are often red and gold so this one has gold embossing: 2019 on the front and a pig on the back.

The pig is mounted on a 4x4 round base which is similar in style to those found in previous sets of this type, as you'll see below.

The animal itself looks very cute, and it's refreshing to see it modelled in pink rather than some inappropriate colour like this one and this one.

Its nostrils are printed on the 2x2 round tile and that is the only new part in this set, so designer Mel Caddick has done well to create it using just the relatively limited selection of pink (LEGO: Light Purple) pieces available to her.

The curved contours of its body continue round the back. The neck is on a turntable and the front legs can be rotated to reposition them behind the back legs should you wish.

Pictures on the box encourage you to move the eyes and ears to make a goofy looking beast.

Overall then, it's a nice model which will be even better when free as a gift with purchase.

As I say, this the fifth such model LEGO has produced, following on from a sheep, monkey, rooster and dog. (I've not included 10250 Year of the Snake from 2013 as that is quite different)

The sheep is the odd-one-out with a very nice, but different, base to all the others so let's see if we can rectify that...

Much better!

Next year, it's the year of the rat...
